Misinterpretation of CT scans of the brain can cause unnecessary risks to patients, resulting in avoidable morbidity or mortality. Non-radiologists
order and interpret CT scans of the brain without necessarily having received formal training in brain CT interpretation. The purpose of the Brain CT Interpretation pocket is to provide the non-radiologist a systematic approach to brain CT scan interpretation.
The Brain CT Interpretation pocket summarizes some basic CT scan principles, provides a brief brain CT anatomy review, and presents the mnemonic "ABBBC" developed by Joshua Broder, MD. Using the principles outlined by the mnemonic, brain CT interpretation can be approached systematically, and ideally leads to improved recognition of pathology. This guide includes imaging examples of the various components of the
mnemonic to demonstrate the main principles, showing both normal and abnormal findings.
