The perioperative management of newborns with surgical conditions is an interdisciplinary effort. These infants generally spend less than a day in the operating room, but require days, weeks, or even months of complex pre- and postoperative care that spans several medical and surgical areas of expertise. Multidisciplinary collaboration as a team is rarely covered in textbooks with a strictly medical or surgical focus. This tends to be working knowledge that is gained by experience. The Manual of Neonatal Surgical Intensive Care will therefore be useful to both medical and surgical clinicians who are taking care of newborn infants with surgical conditions.
This work is a collaborative effort between the surgical staff at Children’s Hospital and the medical staff at Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and hospitals further afield. Its intended audience is surgeons, neonatologists, pediatricians, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal nurses, transport clinicians, and any other healthcare providers expected to render pre- or postoperative care or counseling for these newborns.
Children’s Hospital receives infants who require surgery and complex postoperative surgical care from local newborn nurseries, our associated Special Care Nurseries, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, as well as from other referring hospitals across the country and around the world. The contributing authors reflect this web of community and tertiary hospitals.
In this third edition, we have added several new chapters and have updated all existing chapters, adding illustrations to clarify the written descriptions.
